He ducked back into the shadows outside the hospital. She was so close he could almost smell her on the ocean breeze that flowed down the street. He watched as she quickly glanced from side to side before she crossed the street. She entered a parking garage, and he lost sight of her. He took a step forward and then checked himself.

The area was filled with people—groups of young people who had arrived shortly after an ambulance had pulled up with lights and sirens to the Emergency Room entrance. The young people had poured out of their vehicles and were pacing, trying to get a glimpse as a young man was unloaded on a gurney and rushed into the E.R. Some of the women were wailing loudly. Some of the men were shouting, raging about how they would make someone pay. Several squad cars arrived with lights on and parked with the officers not getting out of their vehicles, but making their presence felt.

In a way, he was grateful the street outside the hospital was so busy. Otherwise, he might have been tempted to approach her. But it was too soon. He needed to stick to his plan. Seeing Stella LaRosa in person had done something to him. Something he didn’t like. It had reminded him that he was more than just a killing machine.

He balled his hands into tight fists. Some killing machine, the cop was still alive.

A crowd of drunk millennials had come around the corner and one of them had screamed bloody murder. He’d been forced to leave without getting the job done.

It was the first time in his life he hadn’t completed an assignment.

He’d lurked in the shadows waiting for his chance but police cars had arrived within moments. After slipping into the hospital he’d seen the detective’s room was heavily guarded.

When he reached out to his contact, he was told that killing the cop in the hospital would have brought too much attention. The death had to have happened during his first attack where it could be mistaken as a robbery gone bad. The man in charge told him that if the cop ever regained consciousness then that would be the time to take him out. Right now, he was incapacitated and that would be enough. For now.

Leaving the cop alive made him feel restless. It wasn’t just about finishing what he started, it was also something else. Examining the feeling, he realized he felt unsatisfied.

The satisfaction of killing fulfilled a deep-seated need in him. He knew that much. But he also wasn’t willing to explore where it came from. That would mean digging deeper into what made him who he was today. Any psychologist would blindly point to a childhood riddled with abuse, but it was more than that.

As soon as he’d been recruited as a killing machine, he had found his true purpose in life. It was the only thing that scratched the itch that kept him up at night. The power he felt in taking a life was a rush like no other drug had ever succeeded in giving him.
